Rainy Days

There was a study done by John Hopkins about arthritis pain and the weather. Some people say they they can feel a storm coming in their bones or that they always feel worse when it’s cold and/or rainy. John Hopkins took 151 people that have osteoartritis, reumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia and 32 people with out arthritis and all of these people live in Cordoba city, Argentina. All of the people kept a journal of all their pain for one year and John Hopkins took these journal entries and compared it to the weather. All three groups were affected in different ways but some did hurt more for different pressures and humidity levels. The study did not show efficient numbers to suggest that weather does actually cause more pain.
It’s interesting to see that the studies done don’t show that bad weather causes more pain. It could be the weather but I think other things cause the pain to grow worse and the weather just happens to be bad at the same time. Some people sleep worse when the weather gets bad and that could affect the levels of pain. Rainy cloudy days can influence our emotion and cause us to be gloomy and when our emotions are on the down side our physical health seems to follow. So it may be the weather or our reactions to the weather either way pain can get worse during rainy days and cold days! so be prepared for those shockingly cold and rainy days that we have been getting in these early Spring Days.

Lupus for the Holidays

Having Lupus during the  holidays can be difficult. Most people want to have fun and go to lots of parties and host parties for friends and family. People with lupus want to do this too. Its difficult because we lack the energy to keep going and keeping up with all the extra activities. We can celebrate for a little bit but then we need to rest and recover from the energy that was spent. If you are having a “flare” during the holidays take extra care to get enough rest and avoid things that could cause your flare to worsen.

Some ways to keep your energy levels up and the flare symptoms down during the holidays are things like try to get more sleep than usual or take naps when you need them and don’t over do it. When you go out with your friends have a good time and enjoy yourself but make sure to prepare yourself and have what you need in case you become exhausted or start feeling achy. I myself try to always have some Tylenol on me when I go out with my friends. If you are in a flare make sure and wear things that will protect you from the winter sun. Keep warm and stay dry!

Keep it simple. Keep it fun!!

Enjoy the Holidays!!
